Small-town reprobate Vinnie is a man reborn. This fact is marked by a fantasy song and dance sequence on the streets of his Lancashire market town that, like everything else in this action comedy, is done with so much energy and gratuitous skill, you can’t resist.

The plotlines are beyond daft, like a slapstick parody of a Guy Ritchie film, but a fine cast gives them a galloping comic conviction. This week’s involve model trains, peacocks, 1980s dolls, a stolen 2CV and an undertaker called Abracadaver. Guest star Bill Paterson plays an ageing financial wiz whom Vinnie and co must deliver to the local drug lord. It goes as smoothly as you’d expect.
