Episode 1: The Circus

Summary

Tommo and Erin try to lure Vinnie out of hiding to assist them in their plan to fleece a travelling circus with the assistance of a disgruntled clown. Comedy drama, starring Joseph Gilgun

Review

This is the likeable Lancashire caper about a bunch of small-town misfits. It’s sparkily scripted by Danny Brocklehurst and situated in a sweet-spot somewhere between Shameless, Trainspotting and Last of the Summer Wine, with added pickled eggs.

Our heroes are Vinnie (Joe Gilgun, also the co-creator) and his gang of slapstick criminals who, as the second series opens, are hoping to buy the lease on a pole-dancing club by robbing a circus with the help of a clown (John Thomson), though the joke is that Vinnie’s gang are themselves a clown-car of hopeless cases.

Incidental pleasures include Dominic West pretending to be a dog and the line, “We can’t un-steal a lion!”
