In the central American equivalent of a spring clean, every year Guatemalans clean their homes from top to bottom, put all the rubbish in a pile and set fire to it. The devil is said to lurk in the mucky corners of the house, so this is a kind of ritual cleansing. Recently, people have been adding devil pinatas and sculptures to make the pile more picturesque.
