The burning goat, Sweden

Every year since 1966 the townspeople of Gävle have laboured to build a giant Christmas goat out of straw. And every year people have tried to burn it down.

One year, when the fire didn't topple the 13 metre-tall festive statue, a group of vandals reportedly drove a car into it to knock it down. “It’s a classic drama between the good citizens who love the goat and the bad guys, the arsonists, who want to get it torched,” explained 'goat spokesperson' Johan Adolfsson last year.

This year, the goat has gone on a charm offensive, setting up its Twitter account and updating the world on its bid for survival.
