Episode 1: Episode 1

Summary

Five pairs of competitors journey around the globe, carrying only limited cash and unable to get on a plane or use mobile phones and credit cards. In the first edition, the teams set off from Mexico City, hoping to reach the first of seven checkpoints - Copan Ruinas in Honduras. Each team adopts a different strategy, with married couple Jen and Rob quickly deciding on a route via Belize, but confusion on the Metro leads to a delay

Review

The enjoyable backpacking contest returns with five more pairs of travellers crossing continents without smartphones or credit cards.

The route this time is from Mexico City to Ushuaia in Argentina, 25,000km away (via a circuitous route) across the entire length of Latin America. First challenge: how do you pronounce Ushuaia? Second challenge: how do you get there when air flights are ruled out and you have limited cash?

The teams throw themselves at the challenge with varying degrees of savvy. “I don’t take buses!” wafts one competitor. But on this show, she will have to take many, many buses. Slumming it, while not taking too many risks, is what it’s all about.
