Coronation Street: Michelle drops a baby bombshell on Steve - how will he react? Kym Marsh interview

Michelle is to leave husband Steve slack jawed with shock in next week's Coronation Street when she reveals that she wants them to have a baby together.

Michelle will break the news to Steve after learning that Leanne is expecting a child of her own. After confiding in Steve about Leanne's pregnancy, Michelle then suggests that she'd like a new addition to the McDonald clan.

But Steve will be left wrestling with big doubts about Michelle's baby plans. Will he come round to her way of thinking? Or is this going to create fresh tensions in their marriage? Here, actress Kym Marsh tells us more...

So, how is Michelle and Steve’s marriage now?
They have been through a really rough period and were very close to splitting up. So now is the time that they're rebuilding their relationship and finding their way a bit. Hopefully what has happened has made them stronger.

Does she truly believe that everything with Will is now in the past - or will she have to work to regain Steve's trust?
They've both made mistakes - she's forgiven him in the past and now he has to forgive her. If they're going to move forward they really have to put the past behind them.

Does she completely trust Steve?
Yes she does - she knows she hurt him, but she wanted to make her marriage work and she feels as though they have a great future.

So, tell us what happens with Leanne when she starts having stomach pains?
Leanne and Simon are chatting in the street and Michelle joins them. Leanne starts to get pains and confides in Michelle that she's in the early stages of pregnancy. Michelle insists she needs to go to hospital and gets Tim to give them a lift.

How does Michelle react to news of Leanne’s pregnancy?
She's excited for Leanne, especially when she hears that she has miscarried before, She's intrigued to know who the father is but doesn’t push it. Really, she's just pleased for Leanne and wants everything to be OK.

What makes Michelle decide she wants a baby and is this something she’s ever thought about before?
It's basically Leanne being pregnant that prompts it. She realises that, as she's40, she's getting close to the point where it might not be possible. She doesn’t feel like she's needed as a mum by Ryan and she's still young. It's a bit of a wake-up call for her really.

Is this a genuine desire or does she think that a baby will fix all their problems?
There is certainly an element of her thinking it will help her and Steve cement their relationship. But she does have a genuine desire to have a baby.

How does Steve react and what does Michelle make of his response?
Steve's not as keen as she'd thought he would be. He was the one that always wanted a baby but she'd even tried to get him to have a vasectomy. So she's really surprised when he's very reluctant and says that he needs more time to think.

What does Liz make of their decision?
Liz also seems very unsure about it and tries to dissuade her. Liz is very surprised when Steve finally tells Michelle he's happy to try for a baby with her.

Do you think Michelle and Steve having a baby is a good Idea?
If she thinks it will help the relationship then no - that's not a good basis to have a baby. But if she's sure her relationship with Steve is solid. then yes having their own child may be a good thing. She has a son and Steve has a daughter, so to have a child with each other does seem like a nice idea.

Would you like to have a baby to work with on set?
I love babies, so yes. It's always nice to play at it and not go back to the sleepless nights!
