Under the Boardwalk

Timid hermit crab Armen (voiced by Michael Cera) learns to come out of his shell in this lively animated comedy. It's summer on the Jersey Shore, and Armen's sand-dwelling buddies aren't too happy when this year's "sea crab" tourists invade their turf. But among the horde is the spirited Ramona (Keke Palmer), whose budding bond with Armen threatens to upend the social dynamic - not least when these star-crossed lovers are suddenly carried off to unknown climes by a storm. There's nothing surprising about this bright, loud musical adventure, with its themes of social acceptance and being true to oneself. But the tunes aren't too bad, there are some fine gags and the animators have inventive fun with their crustacean designs. A talented voice cast (including Bobby Cannavale and Sopranos star Steven Van Zandt) bring comedy chops and real sweetness, ensuring this delivers as perfectly watchable family fluff.
