Five Nights at Freddy's

This solid, if unspectacular, adaptation of the popular computer game stars Josh Hutcherson as the newly hired graveyard shift security guard at a now abandoned family theme restaurant. After discovering its forgotten animatronic creatures come to life after midnight with murder in mind, he must draw on deep wells of cunning to thwart his furry robot foes and save his younger sister from their evil clutches. Although franchise creator Scott Cawthon is credited as one of three screenwriters, the film foregoes many of the idiosyncratic thrills that drew players to the game in the first place. The result is standard fare that spends too much time merely ticking common horror-movie trope boxes. Convoluted subplots risk derailing the narrative on more than one occasion, but Freddy and his menacing cohorts, created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, do just about enough to deliver some fun and frights.
